When it comes to preventing kidney stones, your diet plays a very crucial role. Here are some diet recommendations to minimize the risk of kidney stone formation:

  1. Oxalate Awareness:

Limit foods high in oxalate content, such as spinach, berries, chocolate, wheat bran, nuts, beets, tea, and peanuts. Eliminating these from your diet can reduce the likelihood of stone formation.

  1. Salt Sensibility:

Avoid of high-salt diets, as elevated sodium intake increases calcium in the urine, elevating the risk of stone development. Additionally, a low-salt diet is essential for blood pressure control.

  1. Stay Hydrated:

Ensure you consume 2-3 litres of fluid daily, including water, coffee, and lemonade (excluding grapefruit juice and soda). Adequate fluid intake helps produce less concentrated urine, maintaining a healthy urine volume of at least 2 litres per day.

  1. Moderate Protein Intake:

Maintain a moderate protein intake, as excessive protein can lead to increased calcium excretion by the kidneys, potentially promoting stone formation.

  1. Vitamin C Caution:

While vitamin C is essential, avoid excessive doses beyond the recommended 60mg/day. High doses, exceeding 1000mg/day, may lead to increased oxalate production in the body, potentially contributing to stone formation. Avoid supplements and opt for natural sources.

  1. Dietary Calcium Balance:

Incorporate three servings of dairy per day into your meals. This not only provides essential dietary calcium but also helps lower the risk of calcium stone formation. However, avoid additional calcium supplements without personalized guidance from your physician and a registered kidney dietitian.

Remember, these recommendations serve as a guideline, and it’s crucial to consult with your healthcare provider and a registered kidney dietitian for personalized advice tailored to your specific needs. Making informed dietary choices can significantly contribute to a stone-free and healthy lifestyle.
